I would like to improve that. So I have signed up for an on-line, weekly course in 'un-Sucking' my photos.

The first step is to post a few of my photos with an appropriate description of what is good or bad or whatever about them. I use a Sony Cyber Shot (5MPixels) and an Olympus E-520 (10 MPixels). Both of them I do not know how to use very well and primarily use the settings provided. It is my own fault that I have not yet learned them thoroughly.

This is a photo of what? I think that if I did not know exactly what it was it would be difficult for a stranger to identify what it is. It is a picture of 'pond scum' that has been reformed by the current and located by the shore. It is actually on the Ottawa River. I like it because of the patterns created by Ma Nature. Question: How can it be improved?

This photo is slightly blurred, not by design - he was moving, the camera is slow in capturing the image and, more importantly, the camera focused on the microphone stand, not the face. I like the photo because it shows the emotion of the song in a visual way - the eyes are closed - the singer is emoting!

This photo is of a Kenyan stool. I have removed the original finish that hid the magnificent grain and varied colours of the wood. You may not know that this is a stool, sitting on my workbench. It is a part of a series of pictures of the stool. I like it because I can see contrasts in color and in light and shade. I can also see some of the tools used bring out the colours and the grain.

There are many more that I could choose from. As to whether these 3 are representative of my work is unknown even to me. I like them. They were taken for my enjoyment and to share with my friends. I expect that if I was shooting for a wider audience I would have done a lot more in the composing vein.

Welcome to my Blog

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Welcome

Welcome to the blog home of Garfield McFadyen. Here you will find an eclectic collection of my musings on life as well as some photos and comments upon what I call 'The Sayings of the World'.

There will be expansions on the photos at times, in-depth comment on the Sayings, and explanations (albeit at different levels) of my musings that interests me.

The opening photograph is very interesting to me given my training as a geologist. I find it fascinating what Mother Nature can create in such a small space. The Royal Ontario Museum has 'large' versions of this type of object that can be seen with the naked eye.
